I recently received a letter from Alison L. Oswald at the
Smithsonian, part of which appears below.
"Pursuant to our telephone conversation, I am writing this letter to inquire
about your archival materials and am enclosing information that may assist in
the donation process. Presently, a Dave Sweet Surfboard, 1966, is on display in
the Museum's Material World Exhibit. This surfboard was donated to the Museum
by Craig Stacyk in 1987. The Archives Center is interested in discussing the
donation of your archival materials related to the Dave Sweet Surfboard and
other surfboards you may have designed and developed. I am particularly
interested in the invention and innovation process associated with the surfboard
from it inception to the manufacturing and marketing phases. You can examine
your records for the following types of archival materials: patents, notebooks,
drawings, sketches, photographs, film/vide, correspondence and printed matter."
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has old decals, tee shirts, price
lists, photographs, printed articles, old advertisements etc. in order to assist
the Smithsonian.
Thank you.

Board collectors, restorationists and interested parties:
I have been compiling a board circa research guide containing items to assist in
dating boards and in identifying construction techniques and materials. If you
would like a sample page, e-mail me your request and put "circa sample req" in
the subject bar.
The most problematic is the numbering systems. Some makers either did not
number, keep records or periodically re-started their numberings sequence. Some
sequences were simply lost or forgotten. For posterity and historical needs,
these need to be re-constructed. To compile this information on a board by
board basis will be a multi-life project. The first edition is scheduled to go
to press by summer, 1999.
If you could pull information from your boards and those you see in your work
and travels and forward my way, great. Information needed is your name, the
serial number, maker, model (if any), type of fin or box, general description,
and estimated year of manufacture. If you have documentation such as a receipt
or work order, contact me to make copy and shipping arrangements. You can find
additional information at my humble site:
http://home.att.net/~AndersonSoCal/circa.html
I also need color photos of board logos, especially models. All photos
submitted by mail will be returned after scanning. If you can e-mail in JPEC
format, great.
I provide up to a 5% discount on publication purchase for each board identified
and used up to the cost of printing and shipping. This request will be sent no
more than twice a year to help refresh memories and include new individuals and
groups. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
Feel free to forward this message to anyone you think may be interested. Look
forward to hearing from you.

Someone E-mailed asking for prices and details regarding the limited edition,
signature model surfboards that Dave Sweet is making. Unfortunately, I read the
e-mail and did not say keep as new, and it disappeared. Please email us again.
Thank you.

Does anyone out there know the best way to remove paint from a
fiberglass longboard that was "customized" by somebody in the mid-'70's I'd
guess. At least they didn't chop it down. By the way, has anyone ever heard of
the label, 'Ke-Ki,'?
Thanks,

I presently own a Hobie long board (approx. 7.5 - 8 ft,
guess??) that I bought used in 1968. I believe that the first owner could have
owned it for around five years. It has yellowed and it needs some minor repair
to the fin because it has become delaminated. It has been in my mothers garage
for the last twenty years. On the surfboard just below the Hobie name is a
small metal plate, under the resin, with the number stamped on it. I believe
the number is 271. I am interested in selling the board but I would like to get
an honest estimate of its value. Perhaps you could help or give me the name of
someone in CA that could. My Hobie board is 9'6" long, 21" wide with a squire
tail. The only identification on the board is a small silver diamond shape
(thin metal) under the resin. Embossed on the plate is -
Hobie
Phil Edwards
Model
579
It has been in the garage for almost twenty years, it has yellowed with age and
the fin needs some minor repair (delaminated along leading edge). I bought the
board from a family friend in 1968. I'm looking for as much history about the
board as possible and I may consider selling the board while I am in CA 2/13 -
2/20/99. Please forward any information to Mike Moore

Dear Keleko
Nice website! Always good to see surfing's heritage on display. I've just
launched my own site MAGIC SURF BUS - The Online Surfing Museum and thought you
might like to take a look. I'm a UK-based surfer who thought someone ought to
start a surfing museum in this country (we have none) and I'm using the Internet
to do it. It's early days yet, and I'm looking for folks who might like to
display images of their surfing treasures at my site - If they run or work for
organisations I'll display their logo (and link to their site) on the page top.
Although you clearly deal with serious memorabilia and collectibles, you should
take a look at my Surf Toys pages - I used to deal in collectible toys and used
the opportunity to gather some unique items for myself!
If you think that you (or any of your regular contacts) would like to run a
guest exhibition at my site please get back to me - details can be found on my
"Your Input" page. If you choose to put a link to me on your website, I will
happily return the favour.
Hope this all makes sense

We are a group of Emergency Medicine physicians in the
Department of Emergency Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital / Brown University
School of
Medicine in Providence, Rhode Island, USA and have designed an internet-based
survey to study the types, causes, and frequencies of surfing-related injuries
and deaths. You can find our survey website at
http://www.surfstudy.sitehosting.net We hope to receive responses from
surfers around the world (NOT just those in the United States), and we would
REALLY appreciate any help you can give us. To date, we have collected data on
over 600 acute surfing injuries, 200 chronic surfing injuries, and 100
surfing-related deaths from surfers in 24 different countries (mostly from
surfers in the United States) Thanks for your consideration. Happy surfing!
